AUSTIN -- Interstate 35 has reopened after a fatal accident shut it down for hours.
The accident happened on northbound I-35 just north of the SH 45 toll road around 4 a.m. Thursday. A caller told police that a pickup truck had gone off the road and rolled over. Police say their investigation found that the truck swerved suddenly to the right and left the roadway, rolling several times.
Paramedics took the female driver to University Medical Center Brackenridge with non-life threatening injuries. A 19-year-old male passenger in the truck died at the scene.
Police say both people were wearing seatbelts.
The accident shut down one lane of northbound I-35 as far as Buda. The lane reopened just after 7 a.m.
This is Austin's third traffic fatality of 2013.
