Eanes ISD to review hiring practices

AUSTIN -- Eanes ISD officials Friday said the district had erred in offering a job to an assistant principal candidate whose history included a criminal investigation for sending inappropriate texts to a student and that they would review their hiring process.

The comments come after the district revoked its job offer to Paul Weil, who resigned as dean from a Chicago-area high school last year amid a police investigation into his texts to a student.

The job offer, made public this week, led to an outcry among some parents.

In an interview Friday, district superintendent Nola Wellman said she had not predicted the community’s strong response to the hiring, but that had she, “Of course, I would have made a different decision.”

Weil, who was dean at Stevenson High School, about 30 miles north of Chicago, sent several texts to the teen that police characterized as inappropriate.

The messages included one about the student's job uniform, "Pizza delivery boy? Hot" and, referring to a trip the student was taking, "Don't come home with a venereal disease," the police report said.

In another exchange last March, Weil texted the student: "Such a funny boy you are. When are we gonna hang out so I can put you to work? I have long list of things for you to do."

Wellman said she thought she had all of the necessarily information to make a final hiring decision, but that in the future, she may also make sure that parents, and in the case of high school administrators, students participate in the hiring process.

"We agree that the decision to offer a contract to this gentleman was a mistake,” said Rob Hargett, president of the Eanes school board of trustees. “We are disappointed it happened, and we want to make certain it never happens again."
