AUSTIN -- The Austin Fire Department's hiring practices are now under federal scrutiny. The Austin City Council will meet to get some legal advice after the U.S. Department of Justice launched an investigation.

The department will look into AFD's hiring practices when it comes to minorities. The City has spent millions of dollars diversifying AFD, but some council members have admitted that the department lacks diversity.

In 2009 the City hired a Chicago company to help develop a new hiring process. Then in 2011 the City spent about a million dollars to hire 80 firefighters in hopes that ethnicity numbers would rise.

The City settled a discrimination lawsuit that year as well, which was filed by two white battalion chiefs.
