AUSTIN -- Police have ruled the deaths of a man and woman found shot in a home in Del Valle a murder-suicide.

Officers were called for a welfare check Sunday around 6:30 p.m. at a home on Perconte Drive, east of State Highway 130.

They found Adriana Rugina, 29, dead from multiple gunshot wounds. They also found Terrelle Owens, 38, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge by helicopter, where he later died.

Police say until recently, Rugina and Owens had been dating. Owens' family says he was upbeat and well-known in the community. They are struggling to understand the results of the police investigation.

"I just don't understand. I know he wouldn't do anything like this," said Owens' brother, Detrick Howard.

Detectives are investigating a motive, but they say they have several possibilities.

Investigators also say Rugina's seven-year-old daughter was at the home when the shooting happened. A neighbor said the daughter was upstairs when the shooting happened downstairs. The seven-year-old is now staying with family.

Owens leaves behind two children as well -- a son and a daughter.

The investigation is ongoing. If you have information about this case you are asked to call police at (512) 477-3588 or Crime Stoppers at (512) 472-TIPS.

Rugina's death is Austin's 31st homicide of the year. Although the home is just five miles from the Circuit of the Americas track, police say the incident is not related to the race.
