SEATTLE -- A woman out jogging in West Seattle was attacked by an unknown man Tuesday morning. Now, there's a warning written in chalk on the sidewalk where it happened.
Seattle Police said the attack happened just after 5 a.m. in the 5400 block of California Avenue SW. The alleged attacker came out of the shadows and grabbed the jogger. He grabbed her waist, pulled her down into a crouch position and fondled her.
The victim screamed and the attacker let go and ran away.
The victim told police the attacker didn’t say anything or react to anything she said to him. She declined medical treatment at the scene.
The only description is that the man was 5 feet 9 inches tall wearing a dark colored hoodie and dark pants.
A few hours after the attack, a message was found at the scene, written in chalk on the sidewalk:
“Women of West Seattle:
4/3/2013 5:20 AM
Physical / Sexual Assault took place HERE.
The man ran away & was not located by police. I was out for my A.M. run in our neighborhood. Be AWARE!
WARN YOUR FRIENDS”
Diane Posey was among the many people who stopped to read the message.
"I am glad she did that because I am more aware and anybody who sees it will be more aware," said Posey.
Mike McCann works nearby and the warning in chalk caught his attention too.
"I think it is appropriate to let the people that live around here realize that things are happening that they need to know about," McCann said.
Jordan Giarratano teaches self defense classes at Fighting Chance Seattle in the Ballard neighborhood. He learned about the West Seattle incident through social media posts.
"That's kind of an active message she did. That's really impressive," said Giarratano.
