SAN ANTONIO -- There has been an outpouring of support for a retired military dog that has been denied flights home because he is a pit bull.
Dozens of animal lovers contacted KENS 5 after the story aired on Wednesday night, volunteering to make the 800-mile trip from San Antonio to Colorado Springs.
Jasper was forced to retire after suffering heat stroke during training. He was then put up for adoption at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland. The soldier he had trained with decided to take him in.
However, Staff Sgt. Jordan Lee is still in Afghanistan. Until he returns, Jasper is to stay with his cousin, Paula Adams, in Colorado.
Getting the dog from Texas to Colorado Springs has been no easy feat. Adams said no airlines will allow Jasper to fly because he is a pit bull.
After seeing the story on KENS 5, dozens of viewers volunteered to drive the dog to Colorado.
Dog handlers at Lackland said the dog will stay on base until transportation is arranged.
