Anyone can soar at Albuquerque hot-air balloon festival

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – At the world's largest hot-air ballooning event, you don't have to be Richard Branson to soar with the big kids. Even mere mortals (translation: those not balloon owners or pros) can fly with hundreds of sky-bound participants at the 37th annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta Oct. 4-12.

Mass ascensions are visual treats for spectators during the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.

But if you want to go, the prudent choice is the Fiesta's official ride company, Rainbow Ryders Inc.

Reasons include safety and liability, says veteran pilot Brooke Owen of Rainbow Ryders.

"This way, you know that someone selling rides at Fiesta didn't just get their pilot's license six months ago," he says.

Other companies have to fly a minimum of five miles away from the festival park during the event.

Now in its 25th year (10 of those spent ferrying passengers skyward during the annual extravaganza), Rainbow Ryders offers balloon flights during the morning events, including the spectacular mass ascensions, competitive flights and the special-shapes rodeo that features everything from airborne stagecoaches to comic-book figures.

But you won't be riding in Rocky the Flying Squirrel or Darth Vader.

"We use the traditional, round, teardrop shapes," Mr. Owen says. Thirty balloons carrying four to 12 people in each basket will fly up to 225 passengers a day.

"More than 80 percent of our 10,000 fliers a year are first-timers," Mr. Owen says.

He offers tips for the huge event:

•"Come early. There will be 100,000 spectators trying to get into the field by 7."

•Bring sunscreen and dress in layers. "Some people come dressed for an arctic expedition, but it warms up quickly."

•Don't plan to smoke. It isn't allowed.

•Large passengers generally are allowed. A per-person average is used in figuring a balloon's weight capacity.

•And if you want to be able to say you were there, he adds:

"Don't forget your camera."
