Soaring oil, sagging economy hurting summer travel
12:41 PM CDT on Thursday, May 15, 2008
Record oil prices and the lagging economy are taking a bite out of summer travel.
Officials from travel club AAA said Thursday that 37.8 million Americans plan to travel over the Memorial Day holiday weekend – a decrease of 1 percent compared to a year ago.
This marks the first time in six years that the holiday forecast declined.
All modes of transportation are expected to see decreases, thanks largely to high gas prices.
The national average for a gallon self-serve regular gas is $3.78. That’s 39 cents more than a month ago and 68 cents more than this time last year.
“Many Americans are feeling a financial pinch this holiday weekend from record high gasoline prices and other factors in the economy,” Robert L. Darbelnet, AAA’s president and chief executive.
The forecast is based on Travel Industry Association online surveys of more than 2,000 adults nationwide and additional surveys of the 10 states with the most travelers, including Texas.
This was the first time that AAA compiled specific figures for the top 10 states. Figures for Texas weren’t available Thursday.
