(NEWSER) – A guy doing handiwork outside an apartment building in China got quite the shock when a boy severed his safety line, leaving him to dangle 100 feet above the ground, reports NPR.

Why the unkind cut? The worker, named Liu, apparently made so much noise installing lights that the 10-year-old couldn't watch his cartoons.

"I shouted at him to stop but he didn't listen and soon after, the rope was broken," Liu said. "That's when I called to my workmate for help."

A "petrified" Liu was left clinging to a single line of rope for 40 minutes, the Mirror reports.

"I thought I was sure to fall, but the boy just stood and watched me," Liu said.

Eventually firefighters came and hauled Liu into the building in China's Guizhou province (see photos here). The boy later admitted to cutting the rope with a knife and apologized, said a fire service spokesman.

The boy's father, Tang Peng, "gave Liu a sincere apology" and "compensated him with ... a new safety rope," reports Shanghaiist. Tang Peng said he also reprimanded his son and got him to promise he'll never do it again.

"I think we may also need to take him for some anger management therapy," he added.
