WASHINGTON — President Obama will address reporters before meeting with his national security team Thursday afternoon, as he weighs his options in confronting the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

Obama's statement is scheduled for 4 p.m. Eastern, the same time as he was scheduled to meet in the Situation Room with his National Security Council.

A White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Obama convened the meeting "to discuss the situation in Iraq and Syria, our ongoing efforts to support the Iraqi government, and our efforts to counter the threat posed by" the Islamic State.

The National Security Council meeting also comes as the United States is denouncing another Russian incursion into Ukraine. At a United Nations Security Council emergency meeting U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power repeatedly accused Russia of lying about the conflict.

The White House official said not to expect any decisions to be announced after the meeting.

However, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest postponed a scheduled 1 p.m. press briefing for 4:10 p.m., after Obama speaks.
