MARTINDALE -- A new festival is floating into town and organizers are hoping it will become a flagship event for the San Marcos area.
On August 31 Cool River Ranch in Martindale, just outside San Marcos city limits, will host the first Float Fest, a festival that combines live music with tubing on the San Marcos River.
Organizer Marcus Federman says the event has been two years in the making.
"People from all over are like 'oh finally, a reason for me to come to Texas.' And it happens to be San Marcos, which is pretty cool," said Federman.
Headliners include Grouplove, Houston based rapper RUN DMT and Austin band Wild Child.
Tickets for the festival cost $30, a decision Brickley said was intended to encourage locals to attend.
"We wanted to give a cost alternative to an [Austin City Limits] type music festival," said Brickley. Visitors can pay an additional $15 to tube the river with Cool River Ranch or neighboring outfitter, Don's Fish Camp.
Festival goers also have the option to camp out on the site's 220 acre ranch.
Brickley says the event will have employees directing parking, private security, and contractors coming by frequently to deal with trash.
"Our goal is to leave the river better than when we found it," said Brickley. The event will also partner with the Meadows Center at Texas State. He says the center will provide volunteers to help with clean-up, but also host a booth educating festival goers on how to be good stewards of the San Marcos environment.
