My passion for journalism started at four years old, when my grandmother taught me how to read lines out of the Smithville Times, my hometown newspaper. I soon began writing stories, even producing a low-budget (by that I mean one sheet of notebook paper and a pencil) "newspaper" at my elementary school. When I enrolled in yearbook in high school and joined the UIL journalism competitive team, I realized that I had found something that I could do for the rest of my life.
My love for storytelling came to life studying journalism at the University of Texas at Austin, where I wrote lifestyle pieces for Cactus Yearbook and The Horn. I soon joined The Horn's news team and quickly moved to an editorial position, where I was granted countless amazing opportunities, from getting an exclusive look at groundbreaking cloaking research from UT engineers to covering Sen. Wendy Davis' filibuster of the abortion bill at the Texas Capitol.
In the summer of 2013, I was given the amazing opportunity to be a correspondent at USA Today College, contributing weekly news and opinion pieces about issues affecting college students, including coverage of the controversial Fisher v. University of Texas affirmative action lawsuit, the call to end college football and the use of "bait bikes" on college campuses. More than half of my stories were published on USA Today's website, and I even got a byline in the print newspaper!
In the fall of 2013, I dipped my toes into the world of multimedia while helping my professor, Robert Quigley, redesign the intermediate reporting class in UT's School of Journalism by creating a hybrid lecture/online class, the first of its kind in UT's journalism school. It's still a work in progress, but the new format will revolutionize the way journalism students learn in an ever-changing media landscape.
In August 2013, just before my final semester of college, I joined KVUE part time as a weekend digital content producer. When a full-time position opened up a few months later, I was fortunate enough to call myself a full-time digital content producer at KVUE before I even graduated from UT! I'm unbelievably happy to be a part of the KVUE team and to be able to use a variety of online storytelling tools to deliver the news.
When I'm not working, I spend time feeding my Torchy's Tacos addiction, reading, trying to find the best cup of coffee in Austin and playing with my shih tzu, Oso.
