The Longhorns have a new motto this year, suggested by UT deep snapper Nate Boyer. “For the man to my right and the man to my left.” It’s inspired by Boyer’s military background.
Jaxon Shipley’s availability for the opener is still in question because of injuries. Mack Brown says depth at wide receiver is the biggest concern going into the season opener.
Mack Brown says Colt McCoy and Vince Young made their biggest jumps in ability for their third years at Texas and Mack expects the same for David Ash.
Johnathan Gray is the starting running back on the depth chart, but backup Malcolm Brown says “whoever is in the game, we’re not losing a step”.
Texas opens against New Mexico State, the team UT played in Mack Brown’s first game with the Horns in 1998. Four games against the Aggies and Texas has won all four. Two by scoring 66 points and two by scoring 41 points. But every Longhorn agrees they can’t take any opponent lightly.
Duke Thomas is first team cornerback, after spending five days as a receiver in Spring Practice. His promotion pushes Quandre Diggs to first team nickelback, but Diggs is adamant that there’s “nothing different” for him because it’s “just the depth chart”. He says there are no grudges amongst the defensive backs because they all get to play so much.
Mack Brown says he has to see freshman quarterback Tyrone Swoopes in practice this week before deciding if Swoopes will see any playing time this weekend.
