Dallas Stars honor slain officers before season opener

DALLAS - The Stars honored five police officers slain in the downtown sniper attack by wearing decals of their badges on their helmets in their season opener Thursday.

The team announced on Twitter Thursday morning that the players would wear decals honoring Dallas Area Rapid Transit Officer Brent Thompson, Dallas Police Sgt. Michael Smith, Sr. Cpl. Lorne Ahrens, and Officers Michael Krol and Patrick Zamarripa. The five officers were killed July 7 while escorting a protest.

The family of Sgt. Smith and Officer Thompson participated in the ceremonial puck drop before the Stars played the Anaheim Ducks. Dallas defeated the 2015-16 Pacific Division champion on Thursday, 4-2.

The Texas Stars, AHL affiliate of the Dallas Stars, begin their 2016-17 season on Friday hosting the Charlotte Checkers.
