St Michael's cross country wins state

AUSTIN, October 31, 2016—St. Michael’s Catholic Academy Men’s and Women’s Varsity Cross Country teams won the TAPPS (Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools) 5A State Championships at Paul Tyson Field in Waco, TX at the playoff meet on October 29. The win represents back-to-back State championships for the women.
Three runners from the Men’s team and three runners from the Women’s team placed in the top 10 of all runners and received All-State Honors.
Coach August “Augie” Alcala III commented, “There was absolutely zero doubt that we had the talent to win on both the Men’s and Women’s sides. I’m so unbelievably proud of the poise and prowess these student-athletes displayed. You would think they were all seasoned seniors.”
St. Michael’s freshman Jackson Long was the top runner on the Men’s team, finishing third of all runners with a time of 16:33.4. Also placing in the top 10 from St. Michael’s were sophomore Jacob Pratt, who came in sixth with a time of 17:23.3, and senior Joseph Hodapp, who came in 10th with a time of 17:45.6.
On the Women’s team, St. Michael’s sophomore Kinga Parrish was the top runner, finishing fifth of all runners with a time of 12:46.8. Also placing in the top 10 from St. Michael’s were sophomore Mary Hodapp, who came in sixth with a time of 12:49.1, and junior Alexandria “Claire” Glenn, who came in eighth with a time of 12:52.9.
In two short years under Coach Alcala, who also coaches Men’s Track & Field, St. Michael’s has won six District championships, one regional championship, and four State championships: Women’s Cross Country in 2015 and 2016, Men’s Cross Country in 2016, and Men’s Track & Field in 2016.
The last time the Men’s team won the Cross Country championship was in 2008, when Coach Alcala, an alumnus of St. Michael’s and himself a championship runner, was a member of the team.
St. Michael’s Men’s first place team was followed by Corpus Christi Incarnate, Fort Worth Southwest Christian, San Antonio Cornerstone Christian, and Tyler Bishop T.K. Gorman, respectively. The Women’s first place team was followed by Corpus Christi Incarnate, San Antonio Cornerstone, San Antonio TMI—The Episcopal School, and Regents School of Austin, respectively.
