Austin Aztex move up to USL PRO for the 2015 season

AUSTIN -- "We are the Aztex! The Mighty.." Aztex soccer team chants broke out at Austin City Hall following the announcement that the team is going pro.

It will join the USL PRO league in the 2015 season. The team will also have an MLS affiliate team. Which affiliate team the Aztex will have is not confirmed yet.

David Markley is co-founder of the Aztex, and he is excited for the future of the team.

"The league wants teams that will be successful long term," said Markley.

Currently in the USL's Premier Development League, the Aztex draw about 2,000 fans per match at House Field, and doubled that in the championship game last year, which they won.

"Go champions Go champions!" More chants heard at City Hall.

Fan Larry Short says he's been at every match.

"We are all there, we are having a great time, we are basically cheering on our boys, saying Run! and screaming and yelling and chanting and what not," said Short.

Aztex left back Michael Ambrose is just as excited on going USL PRO.

"It's a huge opportunity for us to play professionally. That's all of our dreams."

They call this next move into USL PRO a step toward becoming an actual major league soccer team.

New investors, Circuit of the Americas co-founder and chairman Bobby Epstein, and the man whose company just produced X GAMES Austin, Paul Thornton, hope to ensure success.

"You want to create something that people will have to come out to, or they feel like they've missed something," said Thornton.

He says the goal is to build a new stadium.
Epstein says he's not pushing play at COTA.

"Absolutely not. David said it's not off the table but by the same token he didn't say it's on the table, said Epstein.

Aztex say they'll explore all options in Round Rock, Cedar Park, Austin, speak with civic leaders and choose what's best for the fans and team.

The Aztex will finish the current season at House Field. There is a match Saturday. That's also where they'll start the 2015 season in the USL PRO.
