The Texas post duo of freshman Imani McGee-Stafford and sophomore Nneka Enemkpali anchored the Longhorns for the second straight game as UT picked up a conference win over the TCU Horned Frogs, 61-56, on Saturday at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
McGee-Stafford recorded a career-high 23 points to lead Texas, including shooting 13-of-14 from the free throw line, and added 13 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season. She also swatted seven blocks, her most since blocking nine on Nov. 24, 2012 against Central Connecticut State. Enemkpali put up her 10th double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
The Horned Frogs started the game hot from the field, spouting off a 9-0 run before Fussell sank a three-pointer to get the Longhorns on the board. TCU led by as many as 11 before Texas launched a 23-7 run of its own, including a 16-2 stretch over 8:36 during which UT held the Horned Frogs without a field goal. TCU's Danielle Breaux sank a layup with 27 seconds left in the opening half to break the streak and the teams headed to the locker rooms with the Longhorns ahead 26-23.
The teams traded runs in the second half and Texas led by as many as 10 with a little more than seven minutes to play. TCU cut the lead to two on four occasions within the final three minutes, but McGee-Stafford's strong performance from the charity stripe kept the game out of reach for the Horned Frogs.
Natalie Ventress led TCU with 16 points, while Kamy Cole and Zahna Medley added 12 and 10, respectively.
