AUSTIN, Texas – Martez Walker (Detroit, Mich.) has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball next season at The University of Texas, head coach Rick Barnes announced Thursday. Walker becomes the fourth signee for the Longhorns in the 2013-14 recruiting class, joining guards Demarcus Croaker (Orlando, Fla.), Isaiah Taylor (Oakland, Calif.) and Kendal Yancy (Richardson, Texas).
Walker, a left-handed guard from Pershing High School who played under coach Wydell Henry, averaged a team-best 20.4 points and seven rebounds per game while leading Pershing to a 25-1 mark and the Michigan Class A state quarterfinals during his senior season. Walker earned a spot on the Class A All-State First Team by the Detroit Free Press as a senior. In his two years at Pershing, he led the Doughboys to a 46-4 overall record, including a 22-0 mark in league play.
“Martez is an unorthodox player who has a knack for scoring,” said Texas coach Rick Barnes. “What’s exciting about Martez and the thing that gives him a chance to be really good at our level is his competitive nature. Like most young guys, he’ll have to get stronger. When he does, his ability to score the basketball along with his mental toughness and his passion to compete will allow him to be very successful.
“When you take a look at this four-player class as a whole, we obviously made a concerted effort to improve our skill and athleticism on the perimeter,” Barnes added. “We also believe we’ve added some natural scoring ability to our team. Our staff is excited to begin working with these four young men on campus this summer and see them mesh with our returning players, who have really worked hard and improved this spring.”
