MINNEAPOLIS – Tom Windle struck out a career-high 12 batters and did not allow a walk Friday as the Minnesota Golden Gophers defeated the Texas Longhorns, 5-1, in the first game of a non-conference series at the Metrodome. Windle did not allow a run until the eighth inning.

Toller Boardman, making his first collegiate start, allowed five runs in 1 2/3 innings for Texas (12-9) while Josh Urban, Travis Duke and Kirby Bellow combined to throw 6 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.

With two outs and runners at first and second in the bottom of the first, Abrahamson hit a two-run double to right center for the 2-0 Minnesota lead. After Tony Skjefte singled in the bottom of the second, Don Motl laid down a sacrifice bunt that Boardman was unable to handle as the error put runners at first and second. Kurt Schlangen later double down the third base line to make it a 3-0 score and Dan Olinger followed with the two-run single to make it 5-0 for the Golden Gophers.

Matt Moynihan singled in the Texas half of the eighth and scored the Longhorns’ lone run on Weston Hall’s double to left center.

The series continues with a 2:05 p.m. start with a 1:05 p.m. start on Sunday. Both games will feature live radio on AM 1300 The Zone. Gametracker live stats will be available on TexasSports.com with live Twitter updates @Texas_Baseball.

Notes: The Texas-Minnesota series started in 1924, but this is the first time that the Longhorns have played against the Golden Gophers in Minneapolis…Mark Payton extended his hitting streak to 10 games for the Longhorns…Kirby Bellow has now pitched 1 1/3 innings this season with four strikeouts…the Texas bullpen has allowed only two runs in the last 16 1/3 innings (1.10 ERA)…Texas starter Parker French will not throw this weekend as a precaution due to tendonitis in his right elbow and is expected to be ready for next weekend’s series at Oklahoma State.
