The Kansas City Chiefs remain perfect under new head coach Andy Reid and new quarterback Alex Smith.
Smith and Jamaal Charles ran for touchdowns as the Chiefs got past Houston 17-16 to improve to 7-0, one year after finishing 2-14. Charles ran for 86 yards and Smith passed for another 240 to spoil Case Keenum's first NFL start.
Keenum threw a 29-yard TD pass to DeAndre Hopkins six seconds into the second quarter to put the Texans ahead for the last time at 10-7. Keenum threw for 271 yards but lost a fumble while being sacked by Tamba Hali in the final minute.
Hali forced two fumbles and had 2 1/2 sacks.
The Chiefs' season-opening record is second-best in team history, topping only by their 9-0 start in 2003.
