AUSTIN -- The doors are open for the Darrell K Royal auction. From an autographed football...to a photo of Earl Campbell...to the championship rings...it's a collection that would make any Longhorn fan's eyes glaze over.
It is the "Royal" collection - 250 items owned by UT coach Darrell K Royal, who passed away earlier this week.
The Royal collection is being auctioned this weekend at Austin Auction Gallery in Northwest Austin. Part of the proceeds from this auction will go to the DKR Alzheimers Research Fund.
Chris Mitchell came by to look at the memorabilia. "Absolutely amazing. It's a neat piece of history, and just amazing artifacts - looking at different things that he's had in the heritage that the University of Texas carries here," he said.
One of the most interesting pieces of memorabilia owned by Coach Royal includes two U.S. flags. They were flown around the moon on the Apollo 8 and Apollo 12 missions, and once the astronauts returned to Earth, they presented these flags to Coach Royal. Lockie Ealy says the items could make great Christmas gifts.
"We loved the flags that were on the moon, and there's two scrapbooks that we're interested in, and the rings are gorgeous," she said.
Chris Featherston, the auctioneer and co-owner of Austin Auction Gallery, commented on Royal’s passing. "It leaves the rest of us sad - that's natural human nature, but I think he's in a better place than he was at the end of his life."
One man who came by to look at the items summed it up best: "Passing of an era. You know, we'll never see a coach like him again."
For those who bid on these auction items - it's a chance to take home a personal reminder of a legendary coach.
The auction will be held Sunday, November 11 at 11 a.m. at the Austin Auction Gallery, located at 8414 Anderson Mill Road.
