Griner dunks as Nimitz beats Pflugerville, 74-47

Brittney Griner scored 44 points -- including the first dunk in the Texas girls state tournament -- leading Aldine Nimitz to a 74-47 win over Pflugerville on Friday night in the Class 5A semifinals.

The 6-foot-8 Griner, whose dunking exploits have made her a YouTube sensation, passed up several chances to dunk until throwing down a two-handed jam late in the third quarter as Nimitz started to pull away.

Her 44 points and 19 field goals set Class 5A tournament records. A senior who has signed with Baylor, Griner also grabbed 18 rebounds and had eight blocks for Nimitz (37-1).

Although a couple of girls have come close to dunking in recent years, University Interscholastic League Chief of Staff Kim Rogers said Griner was the first.

Kaylan Martin scored 10 points for Pflugerville (32-6).

Summit tops Cy-Fair in 5A semis, 49-39

Amy Moody scored 15 points and Mansfield Summit survived a 30-point effort by Cypress-Fairbanks' Chiney Ogwumike to knock off the defending state champions 49-39 Friday in the Class 5A state semifinals.

Ogwumike scored 24 in the second half. She was the only Cypress-Fairbanks player to score from the 3:12 mark in the first quarter until Aarika Reyna hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds.

Starr Crawford had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Summit (33-4). Cypress-Fairbanks (35-4) won the state title last season when Ogwumike teamed up with older sister Nneka, who was the national player of the year. Nneka Ogwumike is now at Stanford.

Roby beats Vega 43-39

Tara Schroedter scored 16 points, eight in the fourth quarter, to lift Roby to a 43-39 win over Vega in the Class 1A Division II state semifinals Friday.

Roby led 31-28 early in the fourth when Schroedter started an 8-2 run with consecutive baskets. She also scored Roby's final four points, all on free throws.

Her last free throw, with 7.1 seconds left, gave Roby a critical four-point cushion. Seconds earlier, Vega's Sharise Richardson had cut the lead to three with a 3-pointer.

Kim Williams added 11 points and nine rebounds for Roby (33-3), which lost in last season's semifinals.

Teysha Matthews led Vega (26-11) with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Neches' swamps Leggett 71-60 in 1A Division II

Diana Patton and Kristen Green each scored 16 points and Neches hit 11 3-pointers to run away with a 71-60 win over Leggett in the Class 1A Division II state semifinals Friday night.

Four players scored in double figures for Neches (35-3), which built the lead as high as 26 points in the third quarter before Leggett rallied late. Green hit four 3-pointers and Neches shot 11 of 31 from long range as a team. Neches also forced 24 Leggett turnovers, turning them into 25 points.

Brittney Jefferson scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Leggett (29-7).

Brock 46, Bowie 42

Freshman Kamy Cole scored 13 points and made nine of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter, sending Brock to a 46-42 win over Bowie in the Class 2A semifinals Friday.

Cole's last two free throws with 8.5 seconds left came after Bowie had pulled with two on a free throw by Megan Workman. Cole, who has three older sisters who won state titles with Brock, stepped to the line and calmly swished both shots for the final margin.

Paige Parliament added 12 points for Brock (31-8).

Workman finished with 21 points for Bowie (36-3), which came into the tournament on a 24-game winning streak.

Woodville beats Salado, 61-50, in 2A semifinals

Brooke Taylor scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Woodville advanced to the Class 2A state final with a 61-50 win over Salado on Friday.

Woodville led 43-27 at the start of the fourth quarter before Salado stormed back to pull within 49-45 on a basket by Brennan Boydstun. But Boydstun, who scored 15 points and sparked a 10-0 run that got Salado back in the game, fouled out with 1:37 left. Woodville pulled away from there.

Hadley Joiner scored 19 points to lead Salado (27-8), which started four sophomores in its first trip to the state tournament in 10 years.

Woodville (32-4), which made the state semifinals last season, had four players score in double figures and overcame 21 turnovers with 50 percent shooting.
