Cedar Hill wins 61-58 on Milson's 3-pointer in 5A

Tanner Milson's 3-pointer at the buzzer from the left corner lifted Cedar Hill to a 61-58 win over San Antonio Wagner in the Class 5A state semifinals Friday night.

Wagner's Devante Hill had just beaten Milson for the tying layup with 14 seconds left when Cedar Hill raced the ball upcourt. Johnathan Roberts, covered by a defender, fired the ball to Milson in the corner and the shot left his hands with just under 3 seconds to play before swishing through.

Shawn Glover led Cedar Hill (35-3) with 21 points. Milson scored 15.

Jordan Clarkson scored 19 to lead Wagner (32-8), which made it to the state tournament in just its third year of varsity basketball.

DeSoto 48, Houston Strake Jesuit 44

Darius Terrell's four free throws over the final 1 minute, 18 seconds lifted DeSoto to a 48-44 upset of top-ranked Houston Strake Jesuit in the Class 5A semifinals.

Terrell's first free throw snapped a 44-44 tie and he made three more in the final 22 seconds for the final margin Friday.

Jesuit (37-1) was the first private school to make the University Interscholastic League state tournament. Tim Frazier scored 17 points to lead Jesuit.

Alex Wilson and Derico Dandridge each scored 11 for DeSoto (32-8). Dandridge made consecutive 3-pointers to tie it at 44-44.

Nazareth beats Leggett, 63-46, in 1A D-II semis

Sage Black's 26 points and 11 rebounds and two late-game baskets by Clint Huseman sent Nazareth past Leggett 63-46 in the Class 1A Division II state semifinals Friday.

Black scored 18 in the first half. Leggett (28-7) had trimmed Nazareth's fourth-quarter lead to 48-43 when Huseman scored his only two baskets of the game -- a driving baseline layup and a short jumper in the lane. The Swifts easily pulled away down the stretch.

Nicky Rowland added 20 points for Nazareth (24-12). The Swifts will play Saturday for their fifth state title since 2002 and sixth overall.

Joe Johnson scored 14 points for Leggett

New Waverly runs by Shallowater 69-59 in 2A semis

Joseph Carrington scored 20 points and X'zavious Harrison added 18 to lead New Waverly past Shallowater 69-59 in the Class 2A state semifinals Friday.

New Waverly (32-3) returned four starters from last season's state semifinalist squad and came into the tournament as the No. 1 team in Class 2A. SirHorace Saulsberry added 14 points for the Bulldogs.

Jordan Scaff scored 19 for Shallowater (27-6), including three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, when the Mustangs closed a 12-point deficit to 66-59 in the final minute.

Defending 2A champ Ponder routs Santa Rosa, 77-54

Ponder's Scott Gregg scored 26 points, sending defending Class 2A champion back to the state final with a 77-54 win over Santa Rosa on Friday.

The 6-foot-5 Gregg towered over Santa Rosa, which didn't start a player over 5-11. He scored at will in the first half, posting 20 points as Ponder (39-1) built a 48-26 halftime lead. Gregg spent much of the second half on the bench.

Dario Mendoza scored 17 points to lead Santa Rosa (30-7). With Gregg and 6-5 Dylan Ballard, Ponder outscored Santa Rosa 54-22 in the paint.
