AUSTIN -- Circuit of the Americas officials are attempting to change the date of next year's Formula 1 race because it coincides with a University of Texas football game.
The Longhorns are scheduled to play Oklahoma State in Austin on Nov. 16. That's smack dab in the middle of the Formula 1 race set for Nov. 15 through Nov. 17 at Circuit of the Americas in Elroy.
According to KVUE's news partner the Austin American-Statesman, November’s Formula 1 race drew more than 117,000 fans on race day Sunday. The Statesman reports UT games can draw about 105,000 fans, thus causing the concern of overwhelming the city of Austin.
Wednesday Circuit of the Americas Chairman Bobby Epstein released this statement about the situation:
"Circuit of The Americas has expressed our strong preference for an alternate race date in 2013. We understand that setting a global calendar can be very challenging, involves many factors and is out of our control. We feel confident that Formula One has taken our concerns seriously and is working earnestly towards a collective solution. Ultimately, our 2013 race date may remain as it currently stands."
