AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas Longhorns’ right-handed pitcher Corey Knebel was named the Freshman Pitcher of the Year by Collegiate Baseball on Wednesday and was joined on the Louisville Slugger’s Freshman All-American Team by third baseman Erich Weiss.
Knebel, who was recently named a finalist for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, has set Texas’ freshman record with 17 saves and is 3-2 with a 1.23 ERA and 57 strikeouts in 51.1 innings. The Georgetown, Texas product was an All-Big 12 First Team selection and member of the Big 12 All-Freshmen Team.
Weiss was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year along with being tabbed to the All-Big 12 First Team. He owns a .368 batting average with 11 doubles, seven triples, four home runs, 42 RBI and 10 stolen bases.
The Longhorns are set to face the Arizona State Sun Devils in NCAA Austin Super Regional action from June 10-12.
