Barnes blogs on... Figuring out the playoffs

It's almost playoff time in high school football and that means... let's get out the calculator.

OK... not for everybody.   We already know about 16-5A, with Cedar Park and Leander and Westwood and Stony Point.

And other teams like Bastrop and Westlake are in.  And it's the winner of Lanier vs Crockett.

But there are some fun standings to calculate.

Look at Anderson High.  Only 2-4 in District, but still alive.  And if one of those two wins had been over Akins instead of Bowie, they'd have a tougher time getting in.  But they beat Bowie and if they beat Austin High, things look better for the Trojans.

You can say the same things about Bowie because the Bulldogs beat Pflugerville.  But they lost to Austin High... by 18 points, which could spell trouble.  Their 3 point win over Pflugerville isn't as impressive because of that and could be the deciding factor.

How about Lockhart?  They beat Lehman by seven points, but if Lockhart, Lehman, and Elgin all win... or all lose... Lehman goes because of losing by only seven... and then beating Elgin by 15.    Elgin's 24 point win over Lockhart could be the kiss of death.

Next time you're at a high school district game, and you wonder why a winning team is trying to score again in the 4th quarter... you'll know the answer.  Tie-breakers.

Let's say Lockhart had scored another touchdown against Lehman.  A 14 point win is much different than a 7 point win.  Especially when your two competitors have 15 and 24 point wins under their belts.  Their is a limit... and different districts do it differently.  But points do matter.

And some teams will find that out the hard way on Friday.
