March Madness begins today. Sort of.
It's the Big 12 Tournament, and there's already been one upset. Texas Tech over Colorado. And Nebraska leads Missouri.
But, this year, does it really matter?
All of the experts say there will be seven NCAA Tournament teams from the Big 12: Kansas, Kansas State, Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, Missouri, and Oklahoma State.
The rest of the conference have only one chance of going to the Big Dance: win the tournament. And I don't think that's going to happen.
The best thing that will happen for a Texas or a Baylor this week is to go on a mini-run and better their NCAA seeding. By one slot. And as much as I hate to agree with Bobby Knight, he's right about seedings. They don't matter that much when you're comparing a 6 to a 7 or a 9 to a 10.
This year's Big 12 Tournament... maybe more than any I can remember... is all about one thing: TV money. Lots of games on the ESPN channels and that brings in money for the conference.
I just don't think the games do anything for the teams... unless there's a miracle by Tech or Oklahoma or Iowa State.
Don't get me wrong... the games will still be fun to watch. And you love seeing upsets. But... the upsets won't really mean anything.
Nope... this is no dance. The real thing starts next week. When EVERY team is six wins away from the title.
