We're hearing lots this week about Tim Tebow at the Senior Bowl, trying to prove he can play in the NFL.
In the coming weeks, we'll hear similar stuff about Colt McCoy.
These are two of the best quarterbacks in college football history, as far as wins go, and people are doubting them.
It's no wonder they're both flexing their muscles and trying to fight back.
Wouldn't you?
Stories today, Tuesday, about Tebow not handling taking direct snaps from center very well. So?!? I've seen some pretty bad quarterbacks take snaps from center through the years... at all levels. It's pretty easy to learn. Don't punish a kid because his current system didn't ask him to do it. He'll do it just fine with a little practice. Do you want a guy who can take every snap perfectly right now, but is not a great leader and couldn't win in the pros? Or do you want a proven leader and great winner who just needs a little time at something easy to learn?
Hmmmm. Tough choices.
They're saying Colt doesn't have as strong an arm as he needs for some deep routes and sideline routes.
Really? And a guy like Bernie Kosar, who led his team to the AFC Championship game, did? Nope. And a guy with a rocket arm, like a Rick McIvor, can kill defenses because of that arm? Not always.
Some guys just know how to win. And some coaches know how to adjust their offensive game plans to suit the skills of their quarterback.
That's what I always loved about Don Shula. Won in the 70s with that great rushing attack, and somehow spread the wealth to three backs. Oh, yeah... he also kept Paul Warfield happy at wide receiver. Then in the 80s, a guy named Marino comes along, and the Dolphins are a force with an incredible passing attack.
The key to these guys finding success in the pros will be finding a coach who can recognize their talents. And adjust the offense accordingly.
I'm betting that two NFL coaches will make the right call on Colt and Tebow. On draft day. And in what they have them do for their teams.
