March Madness has officially begun.
I know, it's still regular season play in the college ranks. But the high schools get us warmed up with the girls' state tournament this week and the boys' state tournament next week.
And if you want to re-live the best of times from your high school days, I suggest you check it out.
The tough part for me is that I know most people in Austin, if not all, don't really care about seeing highlights of the Rockport-Fulton vs Abilene Wylie semi-final game on Thursday or the Neches vs Lipan semi-final on Friday. We have LBJ and Georgetown to root for, locally, and that's about it.
But... the scene at the Erwin Center, for most every game, is pretty cool.
I've been lucky enough to go to lots of NCAA Tournament games, including a few Final Fours. And I'll take the crowds at the Erwin Center for the State Tournament over almost every one of them.
I love seeing the passion that every school brings to these games. And I mean passion with a capital P. For so many of these kids, it's like a dream come true. Either to play there, or just to watch their friends.
It's technically the Erwin Center, but it got it's "Drum" nickname when it was built because of it's looks. And "Super Drum" is especially fitting for these super crowds and the raucous frenzy they can fall into. Or should I say jump into.
It will be the highest of highs for some teams and their fans the next two weeks. For others, it will be the lowest of lows. But it is the Texas-style March Madness.
And I'll take it any day.
