Myck Kabongo is back for the Horns tonight. And if you listen to Rick Barnes, you'd think he's the second coming. I guess it happening on Ash Wednesday is perfect timing.
Kabongo will make a difference. Partly because he's talented. And partly because the team can't get much worse.
But will his return really help the other players shoot better? Will his return really help their dismal free throw shooting? Maybe his positive reinforcement from behind the free throw shooters will help guide the ball into the basket.
If there's ever been a perfect year for Austin to host March Madness, this is it. We get to see second and third round games (remember the so-called "first round" is full of "play-in" games now) so the excitement will be back at the Erwin Center.
But... not until March.
Did you see the attendance for the UT game on Saturday against Oklahoma State? The Drum holds a little more than 16,000 people. And 14,000 tickets were sold. But there were only about 9,000 fans in the stands.
That's close to 5,000 no-shows. People who paid for tickets and realized that it's not worth it the way this team has been playing.
Will they show up, now that Kabongo is back? For tough games against Iowa State, Kansas State, Oklahoma, and Baylor?
But I don't see the big crowds showing up until March 24th. That's when the Big Dance returns and basketball fans have something to look forward to.
