AUSTIN, Texas – Ross Kivett delivered a two-out, two-run triple Friday in the eighth inning as the Kansas State Wildcats defeated the Texas Longhorns, 3-2, in the first game of a Big 12 series at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Jake Matthys (7-0) locked down the win for Kansas State (33-14, 10-6) with three scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit with two walks and five strikeouts. Freshman reliever Travis Duke (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season for Texas (23-21, 5-14) as Parker French figured in the no-decision with seven innings.
Kansas State scored a run in the top of the second inning after loading the bases against French with designated hitter Mitch Meyer hitting a sacrifice fly to left. The Wildcats stranded 11 runners in the game, including a runner at third a total of five times.
Texas tied the game in the fifth when Brooks Marlow reached on a single and fielding error. After advancing to third on a fly out by Alex Silver, Jeremy Montalbano singled to left for the tying run. In the bottom of the sixth, the Longhorns took the lead when Jacob Felts singled home Erich Weiss from third.
In the KSU eighth, Jon Davis hit a leadoff double to left center. Duke relieved French and struck out RJ Santigate before walking Blair DeBord on a full count. Ty Marlow then came in for Duke and struck out pinch-hitter Kyle Speer for the second out before tripled to right field for the go-ahead runs. Matthys would strike out the side in the bottom of the eighth and add two more strikeouts in the ninth for the win.
