Richard Payton has been a Chicago Cubs fan since he can remember. He and his grandfather would always watch the Cubs games together on television.
The 1998 graduate from Leander High School has Down Syndrome. He told his mother before graduation that he wanted to work for the Cubs organization.
His mother sent a letter to the Cubs and much to her surprise, received a phone call from the Cubs front office asking what they could do for Richard. The family ended up going to the Cubs spring training that year. Richard received the royal treatment and got to know all of the players.
A few years later, Richard received another incredible opportunity. He became the bat boy for the Iowa Cubs (the Chicago Cubs Triple-A team) whenever they play the Express in Round Rock.
Richard is also a fan of the Express, but when the Cubs come to town he's a devoted Cubs employee. Sometimes, Richard even does a little trash talking.
It's all about mutual respect between Richard and the Express, and a passion for baseball..
