DALLAS -- He rushed into the record books and today into Canton. Emmitt Smith, the final triplet, was voted into the NFL Hall of Fame.
He was joined by Jerry Rice, John Randle, Russ Grimm, Rickey Jackson, Floyd Little and Dick LeBeau.
They will be inducted into the Canton, Ohio, shrine on Aug. 7.
Smith is the all-time leading rusher. Just like Troy Aikman, Smith was voted in during his first year of edibility. It puts all three of the triplets in the hall of fame, since Michael Irvin is there as well.
Smith brings the number of Cowboys in the Pro Football Hall of fame to 12 and closes a career that spanned 15 seasons during which he rushed for 18,355 yards and 164 touchdowns.
Smith had 11 straight 1,000-yard rushing seasons which is an NFL record and helped the Cowboys win three Super Bowl wins.
Smith teared up when speaking about his father and how "I was living his dream."
"We are blessed to achieve this level of greatness together," Smith said, referring to Rice.
"This is almost perfect," Smith said. "I don't think even Steven Spielberg could have written a script this nice. So many people said I could not do it. I believed in that little giant inside of me that said I can."
Added Rice, standing shoulder to shoulder with Smith: "It's just like playing in that big game, this is something you think about, and it is happening. I never thought I would go in .... with this guy here.
Another Cowboy on the list was former defensive end/linebacker Charles Haley but he didn’t make it.
NFL all-time leading receiver Jerry Rice was also voted into the Hall of Fame today as well. Dallas native Tim Brown did not receive enough votes to be voted in this year.
