What Can You Do Right Now?

Set sprinklers to water the lawn or garden only - not the street or sidewalk.

Use the microwave to cook small meals. (It uses less power than an oven.)

Purchase "Green Power" for your home's electricity. (Contact your power supplier to see where and if it is available.)

Scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher; wash only full loads.

Cut back on air conditioning and heating use if you can.

Turn off appliances and lights when you leave the room.

A statewide campaign called for motorists to reduce air pollution and save money on gas - and it also is giving a chance to win a new car.

“A lot of us doing a few little things can make a big difference,” said Richard Goldsmith, of the Texas Department of Transportation in a news release. “All we’re asking is for Texans to make one or two simple and easy changes to their driving habits so we can improve our air.”

The campaigned was organized by TxDOT and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

They gave some suggestions on how to clean up the air - and cut costs:

  • Remove unnecessary weight from your vehicle.
  • Check the air in your tires - under-inflated tires can cut down on fuel efficiency.
  • Slow down. Higher speed burns more fuel each mile.
  • Turn your car off - don’t let it idle.
  • Fill your tank when it’s cooler out - the gasoline is more dense.

The clean-air campaign is also giving away a hybrid SUV in August - the entry information and more tips can be found on the Drive Clean Across Texas website.
