Murphy golfer shoots two aces in one round
10:43 PM CDT on Wednesday, September 24, 2008
Mark Holliday of Murphy hoped to help raise money for a local church group when he played in a tournament last week. He had better odds of winning the lottery than what actually happened.
Holliday made two holes-in-one on par-3 holes at Woodbridge Golf Club in Wylie. Odds of such a feat are 67 million to one.
After starting the scramble on No. 12, Holliday aced No. 16 from 170 yards with a 7-iron.
"I took great pleasure in writing my name on the closest-to-the-pin marker," he said.
Four holes later, at the 168-yard No. 2, Holliday thought he aced another, but the ball stopped about a foot short. But two holes later, he holed a picture-perfect pitching wedge from 135 yards. He watched with glee as his ball spun back and disappeared.
A member at Canyon Creek in Richardson, Holliday doesn't carry a handicap. The civil engineer estimates he's between 12 and 15. Most of his time on golf courses is devoted to his 9-year-old daughter Macy, an accomplished junior. His only other ace came on a par-3 course in Lubbock while attending Texas Tech.
"It was one of those days when everything felt great," Holliday said. "I really felt comfortable with my irons. Even my iron shots from the fairway were close. It was surreal."
