FW golfer reaches USGA Senior Women's Amateur final

10:36 PM CDT on Wednesday, September 24, 2008

From Staff and Wire Reports

TULSA, Okla. – Two-time champion Diane Lang and Fort Worth's Toni Wiesner each won two matches Wednesday at Tulsa Country Club to advance to today's USGA Senior Women's Amateur final.

The 61-year-old Wiesner topped qualifying medalist Carolyn Creekmore of Dallas, 2 and 1 in the semifinals.

Wiesner used a tremendous short game to eke out pars against Creekmore, who faded down the stretch, finishing with four straight bogeys to squander a 1-up lead after 13 holes.

"I just kept making stupid shots," said Creekmore, the 2004 champion. "She kept plodding and I kept screwing up."

Wiesner finished second in the event in 1997 and 2000 and lost to Lang in the semifinals in 2006.

"I really need to get this done tomorrow," Wiesner said. "I'm getting a little long in the tooth."

Grace out in quarterfinals: John Grace of Fort Worth grew tired of traveling while playing on the Senior Tour in Europe. Then he waited more than two years for his amateur status to be reinstated.

His reinstatement came a week past the deadline for entering last year's USGA Senior Amateur. So with this year's USGA Senior Amateur being played at Shady Oaks in Fort Worth – where he won the club championship 17 times – Grace was more than ready.

But his quest to claim his most coveted trophy on his former course ended in Wednesday's quarterfinals. He lost to George "Buddy" Marucci, 3 and 2.

"I've been thinking about it for two and a half years, and then I had to qualify, so it's something I really wanted," said Grace, 60. "I don't like losing, but when you reach the quarterfinals, you know you've done well. The whole thing has been great."
