Amateur golf roundup

11:23 PM CDT on Sunday, September 21, 2008

From staff and wire reports

TULSA, Okla. – Carolyn Creekmore shot a 2-under 69 on Sunday for a three-stroke victory in stroke-play qualifying for the USGA Senior Women's Amateur.

The 56-year-old Dallas resident and Brook Hollow Golf Club member had an even-par 142 total on the Tulsa Country Club course to top the 64 match-play qualifiers.

Simson leads USGA Senior qualifiers: Paul Simson earned medalist honors in the USGA Senior Amateur for the second time in three years, shooting a 1-under 70 on Sunday in Fort Worth for a two-stroke victory in stroke-play qualifying.

Simson, 57, of Raleigh, N.C., had a 1-under 141 total on the 6,597-yard Shady Oaks Country Club course.

Couture wins Texas Mid-Am: Rob Couture of Dallas held off Collin Stoops of McKinney to win the Texas Mid-Amateur on Sunday at Lakewood Country Club.

Couture, who finished with a 66 in the final round, entered Sunday trailing Stoops by two strokes.

But Couture chipped away at Stoops and took a two-stroke lead into the final hole after a crucial birdie on the 17th and held on to win the tournament, as well as 2008 State Player of the Year honors.
