Michelle Shocked at House of Blues
12:00 AM CDT on Friday, April 18, 2008
Michelle Shocked does what she pleases, which doesn't always please her fans.
"Folks, for the most part, didn't really dig the preaching and a price was paid for that," she wrote in January on her MySpace page, referring to the less-than-blockbuster sales of her 2007 gospel CD, ToHeavenURide.
But if gospel isn't your bag, don't fret: The Dallas-born singer rarely sticks to one style for long.
At recent concerts, she's been mixing Heaven songs with "Anchorage," "Prodigal Daughter" and other tunes from a career that began in 1986 with The Texas Campfire Tapes, an album that was recorded on a Sony Walkman at the Kerrville Folk Festival.
In more recent years, Ms. Shocked, 46, has dabbled in Western swing (Got No Strings), bluesy Latin music (Mexican Standoff) and roots rock (Don't Ask, Don't Tell). For her next CD, tentatively titled The Heartnership, she's planning on recording R&B tributes to Audrey Hepburn, Anne Frank, Georgia O'Keeffe and other famous women.
Her concert Thursday is billed as "An evening with ..." which is a fancy way of saying "no opening act."
