"Asleep at the Wheel" Frontman Ray Benson voiced a series of television commercials and recorded radio jingles urging residents to conserve water.

Benson says saving water helps the environment in a number of ways, so he's always looking for ways to conserve.

"I knew a little about it, but when you put it in perspective of the energy usage, it affects how much energy costs nowadays, and the effect that energy has on the environment," said Ray Benson, musician.

Austin water officials say they have received more than 2,400 water waste reports since the ordinance went into effect earlier this year.

Beginning August 1, people who see water waste can call into the City of Austin 3-1-1 Call Center, 24 hours a day, seven days a week (including holidays).

The water rules require homeowners with addresses ending in odd numbers water their lawns only on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and residents with even addresses can water on Thursdays and Sundays.

Commercial and multi-family buildings can only water on Tuesdays and Fridays.

No watering can be done between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.
