Director of Engineering
Wenglar began at KVUE as an engineer/technician in August 1971. In January of 1972, he was named Chief Engineer, a position he held until being named Vice President/Chief Engineer in January of 1989 by the Gannett Company. In June 1999, he was named Director of Engineering by the Belo Corporation.
Prior to joining the station, Wenglar assisted his father in a plumbing contracting business in El Campo (1970-1971). He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1966 to 1970. Before the Air Force, he worked with the El Campo Police Department as crime/accident photographer from 1965-1966. During that same time, he worked for El Campo Leader News as a newspaper photographer. He began his broadcast career as a disc jockey/technician at KULP Radio from 1962 to 1966.
Wenglar holds an Associates in Applied Science degree (1971) from Wharton County Junior College. He is an active member of SMPTE, the Institute of Electrical Engineers, IFMA, and SBE. He is a Past Chapter 79 Chairperson for SBE and continues as the Newsletter editor/publisher for Chapter 79. He also is the technical editor for the Texas Association of Broadcaster’s TABulletin, their monthly publication.
He is a past board member for Austin Council for the Blind and Visually Impaired and continues to work with the Council and has been presented several Volunteer Service Awards for his contributions.
In 1993, he received Gannett’s “Herb Schubarth Engineering Achievement Award.” He remains active with the Texas Association of Broadcasters (TAB) was involved with the construction of their new headquarters in Austin. He was awarded a special president’s award by the TAB for his contribution to the new headquarters.
In 2011 Mike was honored by the TAB as their Broadcast Pioneer of the Year. The Wharton County Commissioners Court named November 20, 2011 as “Mike Wenglar Day.” The same day he was honored by the Texas Polka News for “Keeping Polka Music Alive” on KULP 1390 El Campo.
Mike and his wife Dawn live in Austin. He has three daughters, Tricia, Amy and Amanda. In his leisure time, Mike enjoys photography, electronic tinkering, computers, walking and a good laugh.
