CAIRO (AP) — The Palestinian embassy in Egypt says that authorities released 100 Palestinians who were detained after attempting to travel illegally across the Mediterranean Sea from Egypt to Europe.
Egypt's official news agency MENA quoted the embassy on Tuesday as saying that more refugees will be released in the coming days.
Authorities came under heavy pressure by rights groups for unlawfully holding refugees from the Syrian war even after the prosecutor general ordered their release.
Activist Taher Mokhtar, who is closely following refugees from Syria — including Palestinians — said nearly 90 Syrian refugees were also freed late Monday.
Syrian refugees who fled the civil war often complain of difficult conditions in Egypt, in part because some were accused of supporting Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, ousted by the military in July.
