SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea has deployed dozens of Israeli-made precision guided missiles on islands near a western sea boundary disputed by North Korea.

A North Korean artillery strike on one of the islands in 2010 killed four South Koreans.

South Korea's Defense Ministry announced the move as North Korea fired a projectile into waters off its eastern coast Sunday, and a day after Pyongyang launched three short-range missiles in the area.

North Korea routinely test-launches short-range missiles. But the latest launches come during a period of tentative diplomacy aimed at easing recent tension that included near-daily threats by North Korea to attack South Korea and the U.S.

Officials at Seoul's Defense Ministry and Joint Chiefs of Staff refused to say whether today's launch was a missile or artillery round.
