Woman breaks car window to rescue baby in hot car

Woman rescues baby from 130-degree car in McKinney

MCKINNEY -- Roshell Steakley went to Target Wednesday afternoon in McKinney to run errands, she left a hero.

"I'm a mom and I guess that maternal instinct kicked in," Steakley said.

The mother of three was about to head home when she noticed a young baby in the backseat of a car. Steakley said she looked inside and saw the child was alone.

"He was beet red and shaking," Steakley said.

The child had been left alone while the mother went inside to pickup glasses. The child's family didn't want to go on camera but said the mother loves her son and made a mistake she regrets profusely.

Steakley grabbed part of a trailer hitch in her backseat and started swinging at the car. She said it took several tries but the window finally broke.

"When I got in there the car was so hot, in a few seconds I was covered in sweat," Steakley said.

Steakley says police told her the car was hovering at 130 degrees inside. They say it was crucial to get the child out of the car as soon as possible.

The child's family also calls Steakley's actions "a miracle." Saying words don't do enough to thank the stranger for saving the baby's life.

As for Steakley, she says it's important for parents to always keep their children a top of mind, but she has compassion for the child's mother.

"When I saw her run out, I'll remember the moment she realized her mistake," Steakley said.

As of Thursday, the family says the baby is out of the hospital and doing OK.
