In Liberty Hill the highway turns into a small, four-lane stretch of road with fast speed limits, narrow lanes and small shoulders.

“There's not much room for error. The margin of error is pretty small,” said Chief James Pogue, Liberty Hill Fire Department.

Even though it was a road Casey Lynn Furtado, 25, was used to driving, she still couldn't avoid the head on collision that ultimately took the life of her and her unborn son.

“You have a car, the speed limit's 70 mph, and you have a car there in front of you, there's not enough time to do anything,” said Chief Pogue.

Investigators say she was driving down 183 Saturday afternoon getting ready for her own baby shower when she lost control, over-corrected and veered into oncoming traffic. A woman in the other car also died in the crash. Two others were taken to the hospital.

“We always know there's going to be some driver inattention, but there has to be some sort of thing we can do,” said Chief Pogue.

Chief Pogue says the collision was a tragedy but something that may have been stopped if the highway was safer. He says the department recorded 35 accidents on the same stretch of Highway 183 over just the past year. He says part of that has to do with the road itself, and he's pushing to get changes made.

Most of all, the chief wants a center turn lane. Other drivers agree.

“The roads are too small, too close together, there's not enough room,” said Eric Johnson, driver.

Many drivers say they've had close calls themselves.

“I've had to go around. I've had people screech up behind me and I've just kept going,” said Kent Talley, driver.

Two new communities in the area have put more drivers on the road. The extra traffic has Chief Pogue pushing for changes even more.

“It just can't come soon enough,” said Chief Pogue.

So far there aren't any plans to install these new safety features on the highway, but there is a public hearing coming up in mid-August before county commissioners where drivers can speak out about the safety changes they would like to see.

That particular stretch of Highway 183 was recently repaved.
