Hutto to install red light cameras
06:27 PM CDT on Monday, June 23, 2008
Drivers in Hutto will soon have one more reason to hit the brakes when a light turns red, and it doesn't have anything to do with putting more officers on the road. Instead, the city is going high tech.
“We have a considerable amount of commuter traffic coming through Hutto and we're wide open as well. It's hard for our officers to work these intersections,” said Chief Harold Thomas, Hutto police.
By mid-August, three cameras, like the ones that went up across Austin several weeks ago, will go up at two different intersections in town to help officers catch red-light runners. The cameras will be installed at Highway 79 eastbound and westbound at Exchange Blvd., and another camera will go up at Highway 79 westbound and Highway 1660.
“I see a lot of people running it,” said Louis Rodriguez, Hutto driver.
KVUE cameras caught a number of drivers crossing over during red lights Monday afternoon.
“I've been here for about three years. Before they set up that light most people were just used to stop and go traffic,” said Rodriguez.
Police say nearly 60,000 drivers go through the intersections every day. City officials say there's more traffic because there's more growth in Hutto. It's the second fastest-growing small community in Texas; more than 48,000 are expected to move to Hutto by 2012.
Installing the cameras won't cost Hutto any money. A private company, American Traffic Solutions, will install and operate the cameras in exchange for a percentage of the fines from violators.
“It's just a new way law enforcement is progressing,” said Thomas.
Some drivers aren't convinced the cameras will help.
“Honestly if you're already going to run the red light then you're not going to pay attention to whether there's a cameras up there or not,” said Rodriguez.
The city passed a similar ordinance in 2006, but withdrew the ordinance before cameras were actually installed.
This time around, they say the plan will likely stick. Warning signs will go up at the red light camera intersections so drivers know they're being recorded during red lights. There will be a 30-day grace period for violators before tickets are sent out in the mail. Fines can reach up to $75 per violation.
