No court-appointed attorney for Carroll

A wealthy businessman accused of being a serial child abuser will not get a court appointed lawyer -- at least for now.
A judge Wednesday ruled that Billy Carroll must hire his own attorney because he hasn't proven he can't get his hands on assets from his salary of more than $125,000 a year and his $340,000 home.
The former child advocate is accused of sexually abusing several children over several years. During his first court appearance on June 6, he told the judge he made more than $10,000 a month before his arrest but can't get his hands on that money to pay for his legal defense.
Carroll told the judge the funds are frozen by his wife, who just filed for divorce, and his business partner.
Prosecutors told KVUE News they doubt that Carroll, part owner of a court reporting firm, is too poor to pay for his own defense.
Police say they found several videotapes in Carroll's Northwest Austin home of Carroll sexually assaulting children and two women. Police are asking parents whose children knew Carroll to talk with them about any time they spent alone with him.
Carroll remains in the Travis County jail in lieu of a $4.6 million bond, which appears to be a record bond in Travis County for a non-murder case.
Police say the bond is high because of fears Carroll might flee if he were released before trial.
