Kyle police search for man who left money at convenience store
08:16 PM CDT on Friday, May 23, 2008
Kyle police have good news for a man believed to be in the military who accidentally left more than $1,000 in a Kyle convenience store more than a month ago: Your money is safe and ready to be picked up.
The man -- who was wearing fatigues and appeared to be in the military -- lost the money at the Tex-Best Travel Center along Interstate 35. The man left the store, but returned immediately to see if an envelope containing money had been turned in.
It hadn’t been, so the man left.
By the time workers discovered it minutes later, the man was gone.
“We were hoping and crossing our fingers that this military officer would come and pick up the money,” said Irene Gunkel, store manager. “Unfortunately, that didn't happen.”
When the man didn’t claim the money in 30 days, the store contacted Kyle Police, who now are asking for the public’s help in locating the man.
“We believe he might be a soldier, but regardless, it’s still his money,” said Jerry Hendrix, communications director for the City of Kyle. “If he is indeed a serviceman, we know they work hard for their money. We’re hoping he’s somewhere in the area so chances are greater he’ll get the word we found his money. There’s always the possibility he’s been deployed and is out of the country, in which case we’re hoping a friend or relative will hear about it.”
Police are not certain the man is in the military, but says it’s possible he may have stopped on his way to Fort Hood, about an hour north of Austin.
Police will say only that the man was Hispanic and in fatigues. They will not release details such as the date or time of the stop or exactly how much money was in the envelope.
“We’re not going to give out a lot of specifics about this case because whoever comes forward claiming the money, we need to be able to ask them some specifics so we can make sure we have the right money,” Hendrix said.
Store manager Gunkel says she never considered pocketing the money, not just because it’s the wrong thing to do but because it may belong to someone in the military.
“They’re here,” she said. “They fight for our country and they give their lives to us, why should we not give to them?”
Anyone with information about the man who left the money should call Kyle Detective Larry Honeycutt at 512-268-0859, ext. 225.
