37th Street tradition in Austin fades a bit
08:11 AM CST on Tuesday, December 12, 2006
Austin's 37th Street, in the Hyde Park neighborhood, has received national attention for its famous, unique displays of Christmas lights. But this year, things are different, and a lot of Austinites are very surprised.
"It's, like, totally different!" said Austin resident Abby Crème.
"We've had, just in the immediate vacinity, probably 50‑70% turnover," said 37th Street resident Paul Lents, who has lived on 37th for a little over a year. His house was known as the volcano house. "People ask us from time to time, where's the volcano?"
When night falls on Paul's home, there are lights, but no volcano. In fact, the decades‑long tradition of the 37th Street lights, has dimmed a bit. Those who started this tradition more than 20 years ago, have moved away
"There are no more founding fathers. There is not the drive that there was before," said Lents.
Thousands of people still flock to 37th.. unaware the founding fathers are gone. But most notice the change, right away.
"I wasn't as impressed as I was hoping," said Dan Haynes.
Some say, it's 50‑percent of what it used to be.
"A few houses here and there, it's really neat, but it's just not as cool," said Angie Haynes.
"I think there are some people who have lived here all along who are happy to see it die down ‑ not as much traffic, not as much fan fare through the season," said Lents.
One neighbor said the tradition is with the people who started it ‑ not with the street. And the people are gone.
But new neighbors say they will do their best to keep the spirit of this street alive.
"It's definitely in a state of transition. Whether it continues on remains to be seen," said Lents.
