DPS installs in-car computers in patrol vehicles
03:14 PM CST on Wednesday, December 3, 2008
Texas Department of Public Safety trooper patrol cars now have state-of the art computer technology -- in-car computers are being installed in nearly 2,000 patrol units.
The $15 million project was approved in the last legislative session. The equipment has been placed in vehicles all over the state and the installment process is currently being wrapped up in the Houston and Austin areas.
With the in-car computers, troopers will be able to instantly identify wanted persons and stolen vehicles. The security network provides real-time alerts, digital photographs, GPS and homeland security information.
"From an officer safety and efficiency standpoint, this puts our troopers on the cutting edge and moves us light years ahead in our law enforcement capabilities," said interim DPS Director Stanley E. Clark, in a news release.
