'Nativity' display takes aim at ACLU
02:52 PM CST on Monday, December 3, 2007
A nativity scene on display at the University of Texas campus has been raising a eyebrows Monday because the cast of characters is anything but traditional.
During the holiday season it's tradition for people to go caroling or set up Christmas trees, and the nativity scene has also become a tradition at UT.
The Young Conservatives of Texas, who set up the display, say they don't like to call it a nativity scene. They've relabeled it a "Solstice Barn."
It shows "Gary and Joseph" instead of "Mary and Joseph," and the three wise men have been replaced with Stalin, Lenin and Marx.
The Young Conservatives of Texas use the display as a protest against the American Civil Liberties Union and say everything in the display -- including a terrorist and Nancy Pelosi as angels -- represents a position the ACLU has taken in the past.
This is the second year for the Solstice Barn.
The ACLU says the display grossly misrepresents the views it stands for, but the ACLU also says it will protect YCT's right to freedom of speech.
